Did John McCain get his nickname from the 1986 movie "Top Gun"?

The character played by Tom Cruise was a wild (sometimes out of control) but talented naval pilot/Hero in the end. I was just curious on the correlation between his first year in the senate and the release of Top Gun (both in the years of 1986-1987). I think that's how he got the name maverick. Maybe not the talented pilot, but more along the lines of a wild man who was a decorated naval pilot. I think we give the man too much credit, but I could be wrong. Please correct my ignorance.
