Safest possible way of travelling with hamsters?

I'm going to see family this Christmas, but on a 5/6hour drive! I've got no one to look after them, and I'll be a few weeks. They've both got boxes suitable for carrying them in, but is there anything I need to be wary of before I go? Or am I just better off leaving them behind ?
